Care for Wounds

After surgery, it usually takes about 1 week for the epidermal layer to heal, while the deeper tissues may require 1 to 1.5 months. Therefore, occasional mild pain or twitching in the wound during the first 4–6 weeks is normal.

  1. During the first week after surgery, keep the wound dry. If it accidentally gets wet, gently wipe it with saline using a cotton swab, then cover it with a clean gauze.
  2. After the stitches are removed, showering is allowed. Tub bathing should be avoided until 2 months post-operation.
  3. Once the wound is completely healed, topical ointments are no longer necessary.
  4. Check the wound daily for redness, swelling, heat, pain, or abnormal discharge.
  5. Do not use tampons or perform vaginal irrigation.
  6. A small amount of vaginal discharge or slight blood streaks for about 2–4 weeks after surgery is normal.

Voiding

Difficulty urinating or incomplete emptying of the bladder may occur. Bladder training can help prevent urinary tract infections and avoid bladder dysfunction caused by bladder over-distention.

Activities

Maintaining a normal daily routine with a positive mindset helps recovery after surgery.

  1. Without the doctor’s permission, avoid activities that increase pelvic congestion, such as vigorous dancing, prolonged standing or sitting, tub bathing, and cycling.
  2. Avoid lifting heavy objects (over 5 kg) and straining the abdominal muscles for at least 1 month after surgery.
  3. When resuming activity, start gradually and adjust according to your personal strength.

Diet

  1. Timely consume 3 meals with fixed amount; adopt light and fresh diet.
  2. Avoid spicy and stimulating food.
  3. Eat more vegetables, fruits or oatmeal to prevent constipation.

Sexual activity

Sexual activity is usually allowed after 2 months; Please consult your physician for more information.

Psychological state

After hysterectomy, the patient may feel sorrow or sadness and it is helpful to reveal and let out feelings to her partner, family, and friends for mental support.

Patients should return to the hospital for further evaluation once they suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Fever (oral temperature > 38℃)
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Abnormal vaginal secretion or bleeding
  • Redness, swelling, and local heat or pain over the wound.
