Cosmetic surgery is a type of surgery that was developed after the Second World War. Cosmetic surgery mainly deals with the more difficult reconstruction or more delicate surgery. Cosmetic surgery covers a wide range of areas; besides cosmetics, it also includes burn treatment, treatment of various congenital malformations, removal and reconstruction of head and neck cancer and breast cancer, repair and reconstruction facial and limb injuries, and reconstruction of tissue defects after surgery. Cosmetic surgery is mainly characterized by the use of surgical techniques, including microsurgery, flap transfer, and a variety of advanced technologies and concepts to change the appearance and functions of the human body.
The Department of Cosmetic Surgery was established in the Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University in 1987. In 1999, a burn treatment center was set up and the spa room and the operating room were also set up to provide care for burns at the Medical Center's Level.
Established in 1997, the beauty center provides a more professional and better set of medical services for cosmetic surgery. In 2010, the special ward was set up on 14th Floor of Li Fu Building. The department, currently led by Professor Zhang Jianing and Professor Chen Hongji from the International Medical Center, has exhibited great performances in the treatment of congenital malformations, facial or facial fractures, breast and neck surgeries, head and neck cancers, hand surgeries, limb reconnections, burn care, cosmetic surgeries and microsurgeries.
In addition to actively promoting "Medical Services, Clinical Teaching and Research and Development," we will also continue our efforts to become the major cosmetic surgery referral center in Central Taiwan. At present, under the leadership of director Zhang Jianing, there have been nine attending physicians, four resident doctors and three specialist nurses in the department. The Medical Cosmetic Center is located on the 11th floor of the Children's Medical Building and the Burn treatment Center is on the 3rd floor of the First Medical Building. The Cosmetic Surgery Ward is located on the 14th floor of Li Fu Medical Building, which contains 40 beds in the general ward and 10 beds in the microsurgical care ward.
As for clinical teaching in the Department of Cosmetic surgery, its objectives are as follows:
(1) to train surgeons for cosmetic surgery;
(2) to train teaching and research personnel for cosmetic surgery;
(3) to establish international exchange and learning of cosmetic surgery in our hospital;
(4) to strengthen clinical teaching of interns.
The hospital is a special training hospital for cosmetic surgery, where the complete time period for training is six years. The first three years include PGY training as well as a number of surgical studies (including general surgery, cardiac surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, emergency traumatology, surgical intensive care units, etc.). And after the 4th year, cosmetic surgery will be the major subject for studies, where students can learn the basics, care and techniques of cosmetic surgery.
In the past, the department had excellent results in terms of reconstruction after head and neck cancer resection, face trauma, hand trauma, burns and scalds and various chronic wounds. Looking forward, the department will devote itself to the referral service for breast reconstruction and difficult reconstruction cases and provide quality services for cosmetic surgery in the future.
