Opened for service on 16 November 1980 under
ex-chairman Li-Fu Chen , the China Medical University
Hospital (CMUH) is the first hospital in Taiwan
integrating Chinese and Western medicine for the
"modernization of Chinese medicine", in hopes to open
up new horizons in the area of medicine by carrying on
the past heritage and opening up a way for those who
follow. Due to fund shortage, there were only 200 beds
in the beginning of operations. Though it was a hard
time, the support of the board of directors and
guidance of the inaugurating superintendent Ting-Fu
Wang have laid a solid foundation for the hospital
which has developed into a district teaching hospital
in 1988.
Since Professor Chang-Hai Tsai, became the
second superintendent of CMUH, he started a long list
of reforms: the Li-fu Building Construction Project,
hospital site planning, procurement of forefront
facilities and equipment, enhancement of the quality
of hearth care and the level of education and
research, reinforcement of hospital management,
enhancement of service efficiency etc. The concerted
effort of all colleagues has ensured the fast growth
of the hospital, the number of beds was increased to
over 1,700, and the hospital was promoted into a
medical center in 2000. Superintendent Tsai became the
chairman of CMUH in 2001 and continued the development
of the CMUH medical system. In 2003 the application
for university establishment was approved by the
Ministry of Education and the hospital was thus
changed its name officially into the China Medical
University Hospital which passed the new hospital and
teaching hospital accreditation in 2004.
Attaching to the hospital's central belief in
"to respect the patient, cherish the personnel, and be
proud of the hospital", we will continue to offer
excellent and holistic medical services to mankind; to
demonstrate the educational and research functions of
a university hospital in coordination with the school
administration planning and medical system
development. Furthermore, we will continue to promote
the features of Chinese medical treatment and the
modernization of Chinese Medicine in order to realize
the responsibility as a medical center and to become
the world's top teaching and medical center of Chinese
& Western medicines.
